Tax Season 2017: Remember to Take Advantage of all Resources Available in NYC and Nationwide
March 30, 2017
As you file your taxes this year, don’t forget to take advantage of all the federal and local NYC resources available to successfully complete your taxes and save money in the process. There are various resources in particular that you should be aware of as you complete your taxes.
For those who earn less than $54,000 a year, there are many sites throughout New York City, including in the Bronx, where you can get free help filing your taxes and advice on which tax credits you qualify for. In fact, this year NYC’s government announced the expansion of tax preparation sites, including 7 additional locations in the Bronx. Find the free tax preparation sites closest to you by visitinghttp://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/TaxMap/index.html. Make sure to bring the following documentation: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Checklist-for-Free-Tax-Return-Preparation.
Qualifying working families can also take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Every year, this important tax credit helps millions of eligible working families receive as much as $6,143 in tax refunds. If you earned less than $52,427 in 2014, depending on your marital status and family size, you may qualify this year. Only individuals with a social security number can take advantage of this benefit. Visit www.irs.gov/eitc to find out if you are eligible. You can further maximize how much money you end up with in your pockets through the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which is for people with a qualifying child; and the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC), for qualified higher education expenses. These credits are important resources that help working families make ends meet and access higher education.
Every year, millions of people miss out on these great opportunities for much needed financial relief simply because they don’t know about them, that they qualify, or that they must claim these credits to get them. Make sure you’re not one of them and let these great tax breaks pass by. You must claim these credits to get them.
