Serrano Speaks against Funding Defense at Expense of Domestic Priorities

During a markup of the fiscal year 2014 Defense Appropriations bill, Congressman Serrano expressed his concern about the bill's efforts to circumvent the sequester and increase defense spending while cutting domestic spending to accomodate this change. He spoke about the importance of domestic funding to provide nutrition assistance to Americans in need and to help ensure all children have the opportunity to attend a good school. He argued that the committee was taking too narrow a view of national security and should not fund the Department of Defense at the expense of these other important programs.

"I am so glad to join the community as we celebrate the many contributions Puerto Ricans have made to our communities, to our city and our nation," said Serrano. "As a Puerto Rican and a New Yorker, I am always proud to participate in the parade. Over the years it is always such a joy to see so many people out joining in the celebration and enjoying the day."
