Congressman Serrano Urges Local and Federal Departments to Address Legionnaires’ Disease in the Bronx
In July, the Bronx was hit with an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease that resulted in several individuals contacting the disease and dying. The disease spreads through the air by the Legionella bacteria and typically affects individuals with weak immune systems.
During the month of August, Congressman Serrano participated in two forums at Concourse Village and Hostos College to inform the community about the symptoms and effects of Legionnaires’ disease. He also participated in a town hall hosted by the NYC Department of Health to raise awareness within the community. At the federal level, he sent a letter to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration under the Department of Labor (DOL) urging them to investigate the outbreak. You can read the letter with more details on his efforts here.
