Open Enrollment for Health Care is Here, Don’t Forget to Sign Up for 2018

Dec 7, 2017
The Serrano Report

Dear Friend,

Did you know the open enrollment period for health care coverage in 2018 is open until January 31, 2018 in New York?

Don’t forget to sign up for 2018 health care coverage. You can purchase a plan or renew your coverage through nystateofhealth.ny.gov until January 31st.

Health insurance can protect you from astronomical costs when a serious accident or illness occurs. Did you know that the average cost for a three-day hospital stay is $30,000? Or that a broken leg can cost up to $7,500? Health insurance helps protect you from these unexpected costs. It also provides you with access to primary preventive care to preclude chronic diseases and treat illness early on. Don’t be afraid of the cost. Coverage could be more affordable than you think with the financial help, including tax breaks, available for working families.

Here are four facts you need to know and remember about enrolling in or renewing your coverage:

  • Again, the open enrollment period to sign up for health care in 2018 begins on November 1 and ends on January 31, 2018 in New York. The open enrollment period is the shortest ever. Beat the rush and sign up early at nystateofhealth.gov today!
  • Coverage could be more affordable than you think. That’s because financial help is available. During last year’s enrollment period, 8-in-10 people qualified for financial help – for most people that meant they could find insurance premiums between $50 and $100 per month.
  • If you had coverage through nystateofhealth.ny.gov for 2017, be sure to head back to renew your plan or compare your options for 2018 January 31 in New York. Every year, plans and prices change. This year, it’s more important than ever to shop around! You may find a plan that fits you better, for cheaper.
  • Free help is available. If you have questions about signing up or want to talk through your options with a trained professional, free help is just a call or text away. The Call Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – call 1 (855) 355-5777. You can also visitnystateofhealth.ny.gov to find organizations in your area that have trained enrollment assisters. In the Bronx and the rest of New York, residents can access free through Mayor de Blasio’s GetCoveredNYC initiative by calling 311 or texting CoveredNYC to 877-877.

Take the time to learn about your options and find the best plan for you and your family. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
