Hurricane Resources
Dear Friends,
The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch or warning for much of the east coast. The Bronx and the rest of New York City are currently under a hurricane watch for Saturday night and Sunday. Depending on the path and strength of the storm we could see heavy rains and high winds in our borough, and there may be flooding in certain areas. Please see below for a collection of both national hurricane information and New York City specific information, including information about the track of the storm and how to prepare. The following list is also available at my website, which will be updated as more information becomes available.
- The National Hurricane Center - forecasts for Hurricane Irene
- FEMA Readiness site - information about what to do to prepare and what to do during the storm (en español)
- New York City's Office of Emergency Management - New York City specific information
- New York City's Evacuation zone finder - enter your address and it will let you know if you should evacuate
- New York City's Hurricane Guide (en español) and evacuation map (en español) - brochure on hurricane preparation and map of evacuation areas (all in PDF)
- National Hurricane Center's Storm Surge Map - interactive map of likely levels of storm surge caused flooding depending on the strength of the hurricane
- MTA's information site - status updates on how lines are running and any special steps the MTA is taking as the hurricane approaches
There is still uncertainty about how strong the storm will be when it reaches New York and how close it will come to the city, so as the storm approaches please take the necessary precautions to stay safe.
Sincerely,
José E. Serrano
