Health Care Open Enrollment For 2020 Is Here, Don’t Forget to Sign Up or Renew Your Plan
December 11, 2019
The Holiday Season is here, and so is the 2020 Open Enrollment period for health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). New Yorkers can now sign up for health care coverage until January 31, 2020 for coverage starting in February 2020. If you want coverage starting on January 1, 2020, then you must sign up or renew your plan by December 15, 2019.
Regardless of your income, health care history, or family size, there is a plan for you. With tax credits and other financial help available for working families, coverage is more affordable than you think. And when you consider the exorbitant medical costs that families could face without insurance, it makes financial sense. As it stands today, ACA health insurance covers most costs associated with health emergencies or unexpected illness. Through health insurance, you also have access to regular medical checkups with primary care and specialized doctors to help you diagnose, prevent, or treat illnesses before they complicate, as well as countless resources to help you lead a healthier life.
As in the last three years, it is critical to sign up and help spread the word about open enrollment. In my opinion, from day one, the President’s policies and actions have sought to destroy the ACA, and as part of this effort, limit and reduce the number of people who sign up for coverage. Encourage your family and friends to sign up to help fill the gaps left by this Administration in public engagement and information sharing efforts. As your Congressman, I will protect and expand the progress made under the Obama Administration to ensure everyone has access to affordable health care through the ACA.
Here is a summary of what you need to know and remember about signing up for coverage or renewing your plan:
-In New York, the deadline to sign up or renew your plan for health care coverage is January 31, 2019. The regular deadline is December 15, 2019, for health care coverage starting on January 1, 2020. You can sign up at https://nystateofhealth.ny.gov today!
-Financial help is available to make the cost of coverage more affordable. In recent years, most people have qualified for help and found insurance premiums between $50 and $100 per month.
-Plans and prices change every year, and in some cases have come down compared to last year. If you had coverage for 2019, make sure to research and compare your options for 2020. You may find a more affordable option that meets your needs.
