Serrano Disappointed by Reports Ross Won’t Testify Before House Appropriations CJS Subcommittee
Washington, DC - Congressman José E. Serrano (D-NY), Chairman of the Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Subcommittee, today issued the following statement on Secretary Ross’ cancellation of scheduled testimony to the CJS Subcommittee on the Department of Commerce 2020 Budget request:
“I am disappointed that Secretary Wilbur Ross apparently does not plan to appear for his scheduled testimony before the House Appropriations Committee tomorrow. Secretary Ross has a duty to explain his Department’s fiscal year 2020 budget request before the Appropriations Committee, as all Cabinet secretaries have done for decades. The Secretary’s decision flies in the face of transparency, good governance, and the traditions that ensure accountability within the appropriations process. Our Members have many questions about the deeply troubling budget proposal from the Commerce Department.
“Our hearing will proceed tomorrow – and I hope that the Secretary will decide to show up at the Capitol tomorrow afternoon. He will certainly be the only witness allowed to testify. If the Secretary refuses to show up, I will have more to say then.”
