Congressman Serrano Statement In Support of Impeachment Inquiry

Jul 29, 2019
Press Release

The Bronx – Today, Congressman Jose E. Serrano released the following statement in support of opening an impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump:

“After much deliberation, I have reached the conclusion that the House of Representatives should open an impeachment inquiry against President Trump.  The Mueller Report, in tandem with Director Mueller’s recent testimony before Congress, indicates that President Trump committed illegal acts in an effort to cover up his campaign’s repeated contacts with Russia during the 2016 election. It is clear to me that but for a legal opinion preventing a sitting president from being indicted, that this President would have already been criminally charged for his actions. No one in this country, not even the President, should be above the law, and Congress is the only government body that can ensure justice is served.

“I make this statement with a heavy heart.  As one of the few current Members of the House who served during the last impeachment proceedings in 1998, I am particularly aware of the wrenching nature of this constitutional process.  It puts deep strain on our institution and on our democracy.  To take steps towards impeachment is to understand that the threat to our nation is so great, and the ability to find recourse elsewhere is so slim, that we have no other choice.  In my opinion, we have now reached that point.

“The actions of the Trump campaign, in inviting a foreign power to interfere in our elections, strikes at the integrity of our democracy.  Moreover, the efforts to cover up these actions are an attack on justice and fairness.  It is up to Congress to act in order to protect our values and the rule of law.

“Accordingly, I fully support the steps that my Democratic colleagues in the House Judiciary Committee, led by Rep. Jerry Nadler, have already taken to facilitate an impeachment process. The lawsuit filed by the House Judiciary Committee to unseal the grand jury evidence that resulted from Robert Mueller’s investigation will allow the members of the House and the American people to know and understand the extent of President Trump’s impeachable offenses during the 2016 election, and his subsequent efforts to cover up them up.  It will surely assist in an impeachment inquiry.

“I wholeheartedly believe that what is at stake here – our American democracy, rule of law, and justice – is more important than any political calculation.”
