Congressman Serrano In Response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address

Press Release

Washington, DC – Congressman José E. Serrano tonight released the following statement in response to President Trump’s State of the Union address in Congress:

“Tonight, President Trump spoke empty words of ‘American Greatness,’ of mending divisions, and of rebuilding America for the 21st century. President Trump’s actions and his Administration’s policies for the past two years speak louder than words. Time and again, the Trump Administration has advanced policies that undermine the economic security of America’s working families– from tax cuts for the rich to a 35 day shutdown that jeopardized the economic stability of thousands of innocent families – and failed to invest in key areas like infrastructure and access to affordable health care. Hard working families and individuals should never be used as political hostages. He talked about the importance of unity and of seeking cooperation, yet he did not miss the chance to paint again immigrants as criminals and to say that Democrats want ‘open borders.’ We also heard empty talk about restoring American leadership, advancing national security, and promoting peace. No President in American history has supported brutal authoritarian leaders, weakened democracy and human rights around the world, hurt diplomacy and multilateral cooperation, and ultimately undermined America’s standing and leadership around the world like President Trump. The President needs to stop misleading and bluntly lying to the public about his agenda and what he stands for. If he truly wants ‘bipartisan action in Congress,’ President Trump and Republicans in Congress should stop using American workers as pawns and collaborate with Democrats to craft commonsense middle of the ground solutions to help working families and invest in the areas that will make us competitive in the coming decades.”
