Congressman Serrano on 5th Anniversary of DACA Program
Washington, DC –Today, on the 5th anniversary of President Obama’s DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program, Congressman Serrano released the following statement urging people to unite and Congress to take action to defend the program:
“In only a few years, DACA has helped more than 800,000 young people – all of whom have spent the vast majority of their lives in the United States and call our country home—to complete their studies, work legally without the fear of deportation, and contribute to our economy. But any moment Donald Trump could eliminate DACA and other important humanitarian immigrant protection programs like the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program. In June, ten state attorneys general sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions asking him to abolish DACA or face a lawsuit, and former Homeland Security Secretary Kelly has indicated that the program is at risk of being ended unless Congress takes action. Now more than ever we must unite and fight in Congress to find a legislative fix to protect the program and ensure that Dreamers have legal protections so they can live without fear of being deported and separated from their families. The Trump Administration has already wreaked havoc on immigrant and Hispanic communities all across the nation with their fear based enforcement efforts. Those efforts are wrong, and I will continue to fight alongside immigrant communities in the Bronx to protect those programs, like DACA and TPS, that protect immigrants from needless and cruel deportation efforts,” said Congressman Serrano.
