Congress Extends Unemployment Insurance

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3548, the Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009, by a vote of 403 – 12. The President is expected to sign the bill into law today, which will then extend unemployment benefits by 14 weeks for jobless workers nationwide, with an additional six weeks for those in high unemployment states. Currently, 25 states, including New York, qualify as having high unemployment.

Serrano Honors Bronx Zoo

Today, Congressman Serrano introduced into the Congressional Record a statement celebrating the 110th Anniversary of the Bronx Zoo, which originally opened its gates on November 8, 1899. The Bronx Zoo is the largest metropolitan zoo in the country, bringing in four million visitors a year to see 600 different species of animals. In his statement Serrano noted the importance of the Zoo to the Bronx, saying, "In addition to being a cultural staple and headquarters for an international conservation organization, it is an economic cornerstone in the Bronx."

House Accelerates Credit Card Reform

Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3639, the Expedited Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility, and Disclosure Reform for Consumers Act. The legislation moves up the date of implementation of the previously passed Credit Cardholders Bill of Rights (H.R. 627).

Serrano Applauds Center for Sustainable Energy’s Alternative Vehicle Technology Conference

In a letter sent this week to Tria Case, Director of Bronx Community College’s Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE), Congressman Serrano saluted the Center’s efforts to promote the adoption of emerging vehicle technologies and provide training to the next generation of automotive engineers and service technicians. Serrano congratulated the Center on the occasion of its fifth annual Alternative Vehicle Technology Conference and Expo, an event held today on the Lehman College campus.

Serrano Urges Fannie Mae Not to Abandon Distressed Bronx Housing

This week Congressman Serrano, along with Senator Chuck Schumer, urged Fannie Mae not to abandon more than a dozen buildings located in the Bronx. In a joint letter to Fannie Mae’s Executive Vice President for Housing and Community Development, Serrano and Schumer charged that Fannie Mae had a responsibility to “remain directly involved with this portfolio until such time that safety and stability have been restored” to these buildings.
